What We Find in the Dark: Venus & Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio

Every person has been in a situation that, for one reason or another, didn’t quite feel right. Or maybe it felt too right when it shouldn’t have—because of circumstance or timing, intuition or logic, the endless tension between head and heart.

And every person will, at some point, choose to ignore those feelings. We rationalize them, minimize them, and explain them away. We tell ourselves we’re overthinking, being unrealistic, making something bigger than it is. Sometimes, ignoring what we feel is simply easier than confronting what those feelings might ask us to change. Sometimes, acknowledging the feelings might mean having to start down a path that, while more difficult, is actually right for us.

Eventually, something forces us to look. To admit. To understand. And, eventually, to accept.

On October 3, 2026, Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio, beginning a journey through this exact terrain: the space between what we feel, when we can name it, and when we are finally able to fully acknowledge it for what it is.

The Descent

Venus asks us to turn inward and examine our relationships, our desires, our comforts, our self-worth, and the things we claim to value.

In Scorpio, this examination does not happen at the surface. It is subterranean.

Scorpio takes us down into the crevasses of ourselves, into the places untouched by daylight, where the feelings we have buried, rationalized, or simply refused to name have been waiting. Venus retrograde asks us to trust our descent—to look at what lives beneath our desires, beneath our attachments, beneath the stories we tell ourselves about what and whom we love, and why we choose what we do for ourselves.

And the deeper we go, the harder it becomes to pretend we cannot see what is there.

For three weeks, Venus will move retrograde through Scorpio, dredging up what has been buried, until it meets the Sun on October 24 in what is known as a cazimi.

Here, the feelings that have been stirring in the depths—perhaps first appearing only as discomfort, longing, doubt, or a quiet sense that something cannot be ignored forever—are suddenly exposed to the light.

At the bottom of the crevasse, the Sun finally reaches us. What Venus has pulled from beneath the surface is fiercely illuminated. The feeling we were once able to evade—the one we felt in waves, pulsating through the body before we managed to shove it back into its box—is now out in the open, screaming for us to look at it.

We may not yet understand what it means or know what to do with it, but we sure can see it now.

And once something has been brought into the light, it is much, much harder to bury again.

During those three weeks, pay attention to what is coming up for you. Allow those feelings room to breathe. Give them space, and trust that even if you don’t fully understand them yet, the opportunity to do so will come soon enough. Let them out of hiding. They are being persistent for a reason.

Don’t shy away from your depths, even when going there feels difficult. Digging deep is hard. Shadow work is hard. There is a reason we bury some things in the first place. So don’t be hard on yourself if you struggle with what you find. Venus is here to support you.

Venus seeks harmony, pleasure, connection, beauty, and ease. But in Scorpio, she is willing to disturb the peace in pursuit of something more honest. She asks us to look beneath what is comfortable and encounter what is true, even when the truth is messy, painful, contradictory, or inconvenient.

So Venus may not support us here by making the descent easy. Instead, she reminds us why it is worth making.

Because the things we find at the bottom of that crevasse may not be pretty, but they are still ours. The jealousy we would rather not admit to. The longing that makes no logical sense. The resentment beneath our accommodation. The insecurity beneath our need to be chosen. The desire we have dismissed because acknowledging it might complicate everything.

None of these feelings make us bad, broken, or unevolved. They make us human.

Venus in Scorpio asks us to recognize that there is value even in the feelings we would rather not feel. They tell us something about what we love, what we fear losing, what we believe we deserve, and where we may have abandoned our own needs in order to preserve comfort or familiarity.

We do not have to act on every feeling we uncover. We do not even have to understand it yet. For now, we only have to be willing to feel it.

Giving Language to Feeling

On the same day as the Venus cazimi, Mercury begins its own retrograde through Scorpio, again asking us to move deeply inward—but this time, through the mind.

While Venus has supported us in feeling the feelings, Mercury arrives to help us process them. What better support could the stars have given us for the difficult work of turning emotional truth into conscious understanding?

Mercury gives language to what Venus has uncovered. It brings the abstract into focus.

Now we can begin asking questions. Why did this affect me so deeply? What is underneath this longing, discomfort, jealousy, resentment, or fear? Is what I am feeling really about the situation in front of me, or has it touched something older? What have I been telling myself about this? What might I have been afraid to admit? Should I do something about it?

This is not about using logic to reason our way back out of what we feel. Mercury in Scorpio wants to understand the feeling, not dismiss it. It follows the thread backward, looking for the root beneath the reaction and the truth beneath the story.

Venus says, this is what I feel.

Mercury asks, why?

And somewhere between the two, we begin to understand ourselves more completely.

Bringing What We Find to the Surface

Just one day after the cazimi, Venus leaves the depths of Scorpio and retrogrades back into Libra.

We have descended. We have felt. Something has been illuminated. And now, slowly, we begin bringing what we have found back to the surface.

Libra shifts our attention toward balance. Whatever we uncovered in the depths does not exist in isolation—it has to find its place among everything else that matters to us. Our values, our commitments, our relationships, our desires, the lives we have already built, and the people we are becoming.

Because recognizing one truth within ourselves is one thing. Reconciling it with everything else we know to be true is another.

Maybe you have realized that you need something you are not receiving. Maybe you have discovered that a relationship you thought you wanted no longer feels right. Maybe you have finally admitted how deeply you care for someone when caring for them would be much easier if you didn't. Maybe the truth has nothing to do with another person at all—you have simply recognized that what you value has changed, and the life you built around an older version of yourself no longer fits quite the same way.

None of these realizations automatically tell us what to do. And perhaps that is important.

If we are being completely honest with ourselves, there are times when, deep down, we already know. We may not like the answer. We may not feel ready to act on it. We may still be searching for another answer—one that hurts less, asks less of us, or allows everything to remain exactly as it is.

But instinct runs deep, and intuition is the tuning fork of Scorpio energy. It reverberates through us long before we are ready to call what we are feeling the truth. Sometimes the work is not finding the answer. It is becoming ready to hear the one that has been sounding within us all along.

Astrology can give us language for a process, but it cannot make our choices for us. A feeling can be true without being an instruction. We can love someone and still leave. We can be afraid and still stay. We can want something and decide not to pursue it. We can recognize that something needs to change without yet knowing what that change should look like.

Libra asks us to consider the whole picture. To hold what we have uncovered alongside everything else we know, need, want, and value—and to weigh each with care.

We can love something and know it is time to let it go. We can want change and still grieve what it will cost us. We can know what feels right and still wish the circumstances were different. Contradictory feelings can both be true, but they cannot always be given equal weight.

This is where Libra brings us to the scales.

What matters most to me? What aligns with the person I am becoming? What am I willing to compromise, and what might that compromise ask me to betray within myself? Which truth deserves to carry more weight?

Balance does not always mean finding a perfect middle. Sometimes there isn't one.

Libra may give us the scales, but life eventually asks us to choose.

Sometimes we have to place everything we have uncovered onto those scales and, eventually, allow one side to fall.

The Way Up

Mercury stations direct on November 13. Venus follows one day later, stationing direct in Libra on November 14.

After weeks of turning inward, something begins to emerge again.

That does not mean every question has been answered, every feeling resolved, or every decision made. Acceptance rarely arrives that cleanly. Sometimes acceptance is simply the moment we stop negotiating with what we know.

We have felt it. We have brought it into the light. We have questioned it, examined it, turned it over in our minds, and weighed it against everything else we know to be true.

And now we have to live with what we found.

There may be grief in that. Relief, too. Sometimes both. Because choosing one truth does not make the other disappear. The side of the scale that rises still holds something real. Something we wanted. Something we loved. Something that mattered.

Moving forward does not require us to pretend otherwise.

When Venus and Mercury finally turn direct, we begin our climb back toward the surface. We do not emerge as entirely different people, nor do we leave everything we found behind in the dark.

We carry it with us.

Maybe that is what acceptance really is: not finally feeling certain, but becoming willing to move forward without denying any part of what it took to choose.

We went into the depths to find what was true.

Now, we have to decide how we are going to live with it.
